The Unit 2 EOY will be given in class on Tues, May 4th. Topics include the following -
Unit 2 – Algebra Investigations
Polynomials (cannot have negative or variable exponents)
*Classify polynomials according to the number of terms
-Monomial (one term)
-Binomial (two terms)
-Trinomial (three terms)
*Standard form (exponents of the variables decrease from left to right)
*Leading coefficient (# in front when the polynomial is in standard form)
*Degree (exponent on variable…look at the term with the greatest degree if polynomial has more than one term)
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide polynomials
*Like Terms (have the same variable and same exponent)
*Find the perimeter of a figure with polynomials for sides
*Find the area of a rectangle given the length and width ( )
*If dividing by a monomial (just divide each term in the numerator by the term in the
denominator…make separate fractions and simplify)
*If dividing by a binomial (use either long division or synthetic division)
Prime Factorization
Factoring
1) GCF
2) Grouping
3) Trinomials with a leading coefficient of one ( ) – use
diamond method
4) Trinomials without a leading coefficient of one ( ) – use
diamond method along with grouping
5) Difference of squares
6) Perfect square trinomials
Solving polynomial equations by factoring
*Zero-Product Property (If )
1) Make one side of the equation equal to zero, if necessary.
2) Make the other side of the equation in factored form, if necessary.
3) Set each factor equal to zero and solve for the variable.
Finding excluded values (set the denominator equal to zero and solve for the variable)
Simplifying rational expressions
Multiplying and dividing rational expressions
Adding and subtracting rational expressions
Simplifying complex fractions
